BREAKING NEWS - NORWICH CT

Turkey in Norwich, CT

I'm originally from the city of Pittsburgh. I was born, raised and attended school there. I still love Pittsburgh and all that goes with living in the city - a championship football team, shopping, museums, music and the arts. But you gotta love living in a small town like Ledyard, CT, as I have for the past 35 years. My friends, who cheer for the New England Patriots, kindly tolerate my dedication to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

One of my rituals throughout the day is checking the local online newspaper site to see what is being reported. On Friday, the following was listed as BREAKING NEWS:

Turkey vs. Car Slows Traffic on I-395

Traffic was backed up briefly on Interstate 395 North this afternoon after a turkey wandered onto the highway and flew into the windshield of an oncoming car.  The Connecticut State Police at Troop E in Montville said the driver of the car was not injured in the collision, which occurred at about 2:15 p.m.  The turkey did not survive the impact.

Yep, like I said, you gotta love living in a small town area.  Although I miss my old hometown, I wouldn't have it any other way.

Linda - you missed your chance. You should have submitted BREAKING NEWS - NEW ORLEANS LA when the mouse/rat appeared in various rooms in our hotel. It backed up Cybers and drove one out of town!

No such thing as a slow day in Ledyard lol. Linda, that poor turkey has hair on the most unusual places! What a photo, and such a tragic end in Ledyard for such a regal bird. Personally, I love wild turkeys. The one you have looks like a true City bird lmao

Sharon -  I have told the story of the mouse in my hotel room many times since that day last November.  I still laugh just thinking about it.

Carole - Last month we had a rabid skunk that I almost wrote about.

I will eventually blog about my squirrels. They insist on living in my porch roof eaves (they can't get in house) at least they are there until babies are born. And you remind me, we always had skunks and I have not noticed any for almost a year! Did they go to Ledyard :-)  Cute but smelly.

It's nice that you have a peaceful city and the only news is turkey related LOL

Eventually we all blog about animals.  LOL   I've already blogged about Fisher Cats.

Yes and I thought the fisher was very sweet looking, even if he/she is carnivorous LOL

Linda, looks like we missed out on a good cheap meal.  You should have gone and picked up the turkey, and I would have brought the stuffing  :)

Wonder when PETA is going to get involved and demand changes in the traffic patterns to protect the defenseless turkeys?

George - Good point.  I try to never miss an opportunity for a good cheap meal.
Posted by Linda Davis (RE/MAX Realty Group) over 2 years ago
Leigh - I knew I could count on you!  I almost put a PETA disclaimer on my post.  Hopefully they won't notice.

We have lots of Canadian geese here, so they're frequently laying beside the road after run-ins with cars.

Very funny photo!

I love my small town too, next to a big one. Saline is small and rural. Ann Arbor 24 miles surrounded by reality.

Linda..... thanks for the smile/laugh. Not about the Turkey not making it. But just for the fact that it was big news in your area. My dad is from Two Rivers, Wi. I loved going there as a kid.... small town of 12,600 in 2000. Just farms, close to Lake Michigan, but I like the small town.... everyone knowing everyone.

Craig - I'm originally from the City - East Liberty but moved to Penn Hills as a teenager.  My sister has the picture postcard view from MT Washington and that is where I stay when I visit!   She took the cable car to work every day until she retired.  L0L about the red up!   We could go on and on with the Pittsburghese.  It is a language all its own.  I'll have to call you to see if you still have the accent.

No I left WAY back in '65.

But a large part of my family is there.

And I owned a comany for a number of years in Carnegie. But that was a technology company and I HATED it.

I had an aunt and uncle who lived in Verona (Penn Hills) for at least 50 years. Very pretty area. I remember a killer pizza joint my Uncle would take me too when I was a kid and we were visiting.

Linda ~ Your area may have turkeys, they are easier to deal with than some animals.  Last week we had a buffalo jump a fence and wreck havoc.  Did you know those guys can jump over a police car?  Poor guy ended up like your turkey.  So sad.

Hi Linda-

I actually like to check out the 'small town' news every now and then.

It's a nice change from the major news - which basically consists of "Who lied today and what did they say? Followed by Brittany's new life problem!".

Shame about the turkey though.......
